Charity Crochet Project

This weekend I was busy crocheting 7 cup cozies to help out a friend. She's a volunteer at the Greater Vancouver Zoo and had made a stack of cozies to be sold to raise money for animal care. Except, she came to work the other day to found out several of the ones she made had been stolen.

She was so upset, I offered to help her out and make some too, to replace the stolen ones. Here's my collection:

The giraffe, elephant and monkey come from Repeat Crafter Me's Animal Alphabet . The fox, I can't remember where I found the pattern and I made up the tiger and the lion by copying a photo on pintrest. The lemur was completely made up by me.

I sure hope they don't get stolen again.

Adorable Halloween Bat

I just finished this sweet little bat, I fell in love with the pattern as soon as I saw it. Unfortunately he took almost the whole weekend to make (lots of fiddly little details) but now that he's done, he was so worth it!

Sunny Bunny Amigurumi

I can't sell this one because the pattern's author doesn't allow it, but I still had to make this adorable bunny. And I gave her a wading pool to lay in. She's ready for the next heat wave. Yes we needed rain to slow down our forest fires burning, but come on sun, come back to us - we're ready

Baby Sandals

I made these for a friend of mine who's little girl is 10 months old, I can't wait to see sweet little baby toes in these flip flop sandals.

Yes that is an almost neon-coral colour. I think it will look great in the bright summer sun.

I hope she will send me a photo of her baby wearing them, so I can show you wheat they look like.

Camo Dog Stuffy

Newborn Fish Tail

I was recently contacted to make a newbown sized fish tail, but this one was to look like a rainbow trout *

This is the tail I made, but I only put the strip on one side so if you wanted to use if for photography purposes, you would just turn it around and use the plain side. To make it more fishy, I ran a shimmery iridescent rainbow filament along the wool during the crocheting so it glimmers and shines

The baby was just born last week, and the new momma promised she'd send me a photo of her baby in the tail as soon as she could. I will share it when I get it.

TV and the Granny Square

This is a really good article about the Granny Square Afghan and it's presence in TV shows - read this now. If you are a crocheter (or a TV Sitcom watcher), I am sure you will enjoy it.

Although I like the black border on many of them, I do really like the fresh springy look when a white border and bright colours are used. Just google the words "granny square afghan" and you will see that literally thousands of variations have been done. The blanket has been made by many crocheters across the world of 40+ years.

There are two other styles of aghans that I really like. One, I guess, could be considered a variation of the granny square. It is called the Babette. I love it because of the large and small squares and the way the colours are exchanged from one square to another. If I was going to make an afghan, I think I would start with the Babette. Here's just one example of one still in the process. This is probably about 1/4 of a full blanket.

The second style I like, currently flying off people's hooks right now, is the 'graphghan". This is where an image is charted out and then the whole afghan is crocheted like a large pixelated image. Again, you have to google it to see the incredible pool of talent and variations that have been done - everything from Walter White of Breaking Bad, to Disney princesses, sports team and college logos, to images of pets or family members. Computer programs and/or apps can help you create your own personalized images and some will even chart out the colours you need.

Of course there are many, many other styles of afghans done including Tree of Life, Ripple  and the list goes on. Did you have one in your house? Or do you currently have one? What's your favourite TV afghan?

Giving the slip(per)

Although it is almost Spring, there still are some chilly mornings so these crocodile stitch slippers are still needed.

Made with a denim blue acrylic yarn they are washable and machine dryable and very durable. Contact me if you're interested in a customer pair.
